A hut trip in Zermatt

An alpine hut trip had always been on our family's bucket list — the ultimate adventure, with the least amount of effort. This hut offered everything we needed: sweeping views of the Matterhorn, a gondola-assisted approach followed by an easy alpine hike, a gourmet dinner and a lake stroll at sunset. If a mountain hut trip with a kid sounds appealing but the big technical hike is what's stopping you, this is the version that works.

🏨 Landing in Zermatt

We rolled into Zermatt — the car-free village at the base of the Matterhorn — and checked into Hotel Derby right on Bahnhofstrasse, a couple of minutes' walk from the train station. We'd booked one of their newly renovated rooms with a bunk bed for our guy, plus a huge terrace with a Matterhorn view. Breakfast was included, which came in handy the next morning before the early hike.

The best part for a one-night-then-up-the-mountain trip: the hotel let us leave our main bags at reception for the night we'd be up at the hut. No need to haul full packs up the lift — just what we needed for the overnight.

🚡 Riding the lifts up

Instead of hiking the full climb out of the valley, we took the gondola and connecting lifts most of the way up toward Sunnegga and on toward Fluhalp. By the time we stepped off the last lift, we only had a modest stretch of trail left to reach the hut.

🥾 A short hike with a big view

With most of the elevation handled by the lifts, we spent the rest of the day just wandering — no rush, no big mileage goal. The trails around Fluhalp roll through open alpine terrain with the Matterhorn sitting right in front of you almost the entire time, which never really stops being surreal no matter how many times you look up.
